Heart For Mission Episode 4: Lidia Rojas

Lidia is a Sacred Heart student and Director of Religious Education and Hispanic Ministry at Church of the Holy Family in Novi, MI.

Lidia Rojas, born in Northern Mexico, is the youngest of a family of six. She has been living in Michigan since 1998, and studied an undergraduate degree in Religious Education Science in Escuela de la Fe Institute of Catechetical Ministry. She has a Certification in Catholic Theology at SHMS and is certified by the AOD as RCIA and DRE Coordinator. She is studying for a Bachelor of Arts at SHMS. She worked part time at the Archdiocese of Detroit as the Hispanic Ministry Coordinator for the Northwest Region. She was a co-facilitator for the Hispanic Women’s Conference. Lidia works full-time as Director of Religious Education and Hispanic Ministry at Church of the Holy Family in Novi. She actively volunteers at Right to Life of Michigan. Lidia has been married for 30 years. She and her husband are proudly parents of two young adults, Ruben, 25; and Stephanie, 20.

Lidia recalls how she was introduced to ministry and to the Catholic Theology Certification program at Sacred Heart and God’s calling to her to continue her education. She reflects on the support of her pastor and instructors in helping her to achieve her academic goals. She shares some of her love for connecting with and learning from her colleagues at the seminary and the inspiration of being able to immediately apply what she’s learning into her ministry.

Lidia discusses how being involved in a small group at Holy Family helped her connect with other Hispanics in the area, and her journey from there to becoming the parish’s Hispanic Ministry Coordinator. She and Dr. Gerlach talk about the impact of Holy Family’s Hispanic Ministry in the surrounding community, their bilingual Religious Education program, and the Holy Spirit’s contributions to their work.

Effect of the pandemic on ministry : 13:32

Lidia shares her reliance on the Holy Spirit to inspire the parish family to connect in new ways due to the pandemic. She reaffirms the notion that parents are the primary catechists and mentions some of the ways the Holy Family team equipped parents with the means to keep teaching their children about Jesus. She touches on the new spirit she’s seeing come forth from the physical closeness we’ve shared with our families, and some of their considerations when planning to come back.
