Eighteen men receive formal installation into new ministries.

Continuing their journey toward the temporary diaconate and later to the priesthood, seven seminarians received installation into the Ministry of Lector and eleven seminarians were installed into the Ministry of Acolyte in October. Both installations are official acts of the Church: lectors are authorized to proclaim the Sacred Scriptures from the ambo (except for the Gospels), while acolytes are authorized to aid the deacon and assist the priest in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy.

At Sacred Heart, men in their second year of theological formation are installed as lectors, or readers of the Word. On October 9 at the seminary, Auxiliary Bishop Michael Byrnes of Detroit presided at the Mass and Ministry of Lector ceremony of Christopher Muer of the Archdiocese of Detroit; Stephen Blaxton and Adam Maher of the Diocese of Saginaw; Joshua Erickson of the Diocese of Steubenville; Philip Klaas of the Diocese of Madison; and John Machiorlatti of the Diocese of Lansing.

The closing prayer of the ceremony calls the seminarians to be faithful to the word entrusted to them, proclaim Christ to the world, and so give glory to our Father in heaven. Each man received a book of Scriptures from Bishop Byrnes, symbolizing his new ministry of the Word. A lector is called, as well, to teach the Faith and prepare the faithful for receiving the Sacraments.

The presiding celebrant for the Ministry of Acolyte Mass and installation on October 23 was Most Rev. Earl Boyea, Bishop of Lansing. These are the men who were received into the ministry in Sacred Heart's main chapel: John Bettin, Andrew Dawson, Matthew Hood, Mark Livingston, Craig Marion, and Mark Tibai of the Archdiocese of Detroit; Joseph Campbell, Alberto Nickerson, and Anthony Smela of the Diocese of Lansing; Christopher Bierlein of the Diocese of Saginaw; and Jared Holzhuter of the Diocese of Madison.

Acolytes also are called to care for the sacred vessels used at Mass. Bishop Boyea presented each man with a paten that represents being entrusted with the bread and wine brought to the altar by God's people to be consecrated into the Body and Blood of Christ.

Please remember to pray for these seminarians as they continue their journey toward the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
