On Tuesday, November 3rd, Sacred Heart dedicated its track to the memorial of late Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit Bp. Walter “Joe” Schoenherr.
Bishop Schoenherr was ordained a priest by Cardinal Mooney in 1945 and installed as a bishop by Cardinal Dearden in 1968. Sacred Heart’s memorial blessing of the athletic track in his honor is especially fitting, as Bp. Schoenherr was recognized in 1941 as the school’s “Best Athlete”.
Roy Schoenherr, nephew of the bishop, attended the ceremony with his wife Judi, along with Sacred Heart rector Msgr. Todd Lajiness; Bp. Donald Hanchon, Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit and Moderator of the Central Region; Fr. Craig Marion, Associate Pastor at St. Paul on the Lake Parish; Fr. Ron Victor, Pastor at St. Isidore Parish; and Ray and Barbara Lohman, friends of the Schoenherr family.
Msgr. Lajiness led the blessing with the assistance of Fr. Marion and Fr. Victor, and Bp. Hanchon offered his congratulations to the Schoenherr family on the memorial, citing Bp. Schoenherr as a great athlete and “model for [him] as a pastor and as a bishop!”
