Truly "Giving of Themselves"

by Frank Hurmoz

Seminarians connect with community through annual blood drive.

Working alongside the American Red Cross, Sacred Heart's undergraduate seminarians sponsored their annual Spring Blood Drive. They held it on Tuesday, March 24, in Classrooms 11 and 12 that were specially outfitted for the event.

I was privileged to be the coordinator of the blood drive. Resident priests, faculty members, lay staff, seminarians, and commuter students were among the participants. Twenty-nine people donated one unit of blood each, while one person was a "double-red" donor. According to the Red Cross, these twenty-nine pints of lifesaving blood gave as many as eighty-two hospital patients a chance to enjoy good health again.

As we approach Holy Week, Jesus is our exemplar. Jesus shed his blood so humanity can have spiritual health and so we can live eternally.

Similarly, our community imitated Christ by donating blood so brothers and sisters can have physical life. Even though some donors did not like needles, they put aside their fears. Figuratively and literally, they "gave of themselves" so that others might live.
