Auditorium Renovation Project Revives a Rich History

by Wendy Miller Bueche

With a history spanning more than a century, Sacred Heart Major Seminary has been a cornerstone of religious education and spiritual growth. Today, as we stand at the intersection of our rich history and a promising future, it is essential that we invest in the renovation and modernization of our facilities, and we are grateful to announce a significant project to revitalize the auditorium: “Revive, Restore, Rejoice: Auditorium Renovation Project.”

The auditorium, located at the heart of our campus, has witnessed countless lectures, performances, and moments of spiritual inspiration. With a rich history that extends far beyond the walls of our seminary, it has hosted community events that have brought together people from all walks of life, parish events that have strengthened the bonds of our local faith communities, and events for the Archdiocese of Detroit that have fostered unity and spiritual growth.

Progress and Preservation: A Glimpse into Our Auditorium Renovation Project

Our renovation project extends not only to the interior but also to the exterior of our auditorium. The roof, along with necessary gutter and masonry work, is currently undergoing repair. This essential phase of the project ensures that our iconic auditorium remains structurally sound and able to withstand the test of time for generations to come.

Preserving the Integrity and Beauty

The renovation project is being overseen by John Duncan, Facilities Manager. Mr. Duncan not only ensures the management of day-to-day operations, but he is also a caretaker of sorts, and his thoughtful and careful planning and preparation for any revitalization activity is a testament to his commitment to safeguarding the integrity and beauty of this institution.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of contractors who share our commitment to preserving this magnificent 100-year-old building. Their expertise ensures that every aspect of the renovation aligns with the historical and architectural significance of our seminary.

Charting the Path Forward

•  Modernization for the 21st Century: $350,000
The cornerstone of our renovation project is the installation of modern audio and visual capabilities. Our auditorium, once a haven of sacred gatherings and academic pursuits, is in need of technological rejuvenation. By investing $350,000, we will transform this historic space into a cutting-edge facility, on par with modern business centers and educational institutions. This upgrade will empower us to host dynamic events, lectures, and gatherings, amplifying our mission and expanding our reach into the digital age.

•  Comfort All Year Round: $250,000
Our auditorium currently lacks air conditioning, limiting its use during hot summer months and chilly winters. To create a comfortable and inviting four-season space, we need to invest $250,000 in heating and cooling installations. This addition will ensure that our auditorium remains a welcoming hub for learning, worship, and community gatherings throughout the year.

•  Restoring Beauty: $286,000
The historic charm of our auditorium lies in its architecture and aesthetics. To preserve its timeless beauty, we plan to invest $136,000 in painting and plastering and $50,000 in window repair and treatment/upholstery. These updates will honor the heritage of our seminary while creating a refreshed, inviting atmosphere for all who enter.

•  Illuminating the Path Forward: $100,000
The lighting in our auditorium is in need of an upgrade to enhance the overall ambiance and functionality of the space. With a $100,000 investment in lighting, we can create an environment that fosters learning, reflection, and spiritual growth.

•  Comfortable Seating for All: $100,000
Our auditorium can accommodate up to 500 people, but the seating is outdated and uncomfortable. A $100,000 investment will provide new, comfortable seating for our community members, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the events and gatherings held within these walls.

•  Welcoming Underfoot: $70,000
To complete the renovation, we plan to invest $70,000 in new carpeting. This addition will not only enhance the visual appeal of the space but improve acoustics, creating a more immersive and inviting environment.

An Investment in the Future

We have successfully raised over $400,000 to support the structural revitalization of this space, and we remain deeply grateful to our supporters, donors, and friends who have made this possible. And, while we celebrate the progress made thus far, there is still work to be done.

We prayerfully invite you to join us in this historic renovation effort. As a contributor to “Revive, Restore, Rejoice”, you are investing in the future of Sacred Heart Major Seminary and the individuals who will benefit from this revitalized space.  To support the Auditorium Renovation Project, contact Emily Berschback at berschback.emily@shms.edu or call (313) 596-7424.
