Teeing up vocations: 44th annual Desert Golf Classic supports seminarians

Golfers hit the links at Saint John’s Resort’s championship course, The Cardinal, to raise funds for annual Desert Formation Experience

Golfers gathered on the fairways and greens Monday, Oct. 5, for a day of friendly competition and support for the mission of Sacred Heart Major Seminary during the 44th annual Desert Golf Classic at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth.

The annual fundraising event is more than just a golf outing; for more than four decades, it has brought together seminarians, golfers, sponsors and clergy to support Sacred Heart’s Desert Formation Experience, a 30-day spiritual pilgrimage for graduate seminarians and a meaningful part of their formation in preparation for their future priestly ministry.

Following registration and breakfast, Detroit Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger led golfers in prayer before they made their way to The Cardinal – Saint John’s championship-level golf course – for the 10 a.m. shotgun start.

This year’s outing marked Fr. Kevin Creagh’s first time participating in the seminary’s longstanding traditional golf outing as rector of the seminary. Fr. Creagh joined the seminarians in playing an active role in welcoming, assisting and spending time with supporters.

After a successful morning and early afternoon spent on the links, supporters made their way to the Garden Pavilion for a reception and evening programming, chaired by Deacon Charles Bemiss, a transitional deacon for the Archdiocese of Detroit, and co-chaired by Jonathan Galvas, a third-year seminarian from the Diocese of Lansing.

The golfers heard from Patrick Jaboro, a seminarian from the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle, who shared his personal experience with the pilgrimage, giving supporters a first-hand glimpse into the young men impacted by their generosity.

During the evening program, special recognition was given to Mr. Ray Lope, a longtime and dedicated supporter and one of the founders of the Desert Golf Classic, who has participated in all 44 outings.

This year’s tournament winners included:

Closest to the Pin (Dearden Cup): Patrick Jaboro

Longest Drive: Erich Mau (Men’s) and Jennifer Jones (Women’s)

First Place Winners (16 Under):

  • Joe Kloka
  • Tim Lafferty
