Walking for a Worthy Cause

by Perrin Atisha

Focus: HOPE held its annual walk in support of the needy on Sunday, October 12. It was an event filled with great joy, laughs, many people from different ethnicities and religion—and participation from your very own Sacred Heart family.

Sacred Heart used to be greatly involved with the walk, so this year we decided to show our support again. Focus: HOPE is an organization that provides mentoring, education services, and career management for those in need. It is a community focused on spreading Christ's love by combatting poverty and injustice.

I and brother seminarians John Miller and Thomas Merlo weren't sure what to expect on our way to the walk, now called Eleanor's Walk for Hope in honor of Focus: HOPE co-founder, the late Eleanor Josaitis. We showed up, along with faculty member Sr. Mary Finn, and there many people gathered, dancing, singing, and shoveling through the obstacle courses. Great food, great company, and joyful spirits are what we found. Focus: HOPE was able to raise over $310,000 through this fundraiser and four-mile walk through our neighborhood.

We live in a community in the city of Detroit and this city is our home. The people of Detroit are our family. To be able to be at the walk and show our support was beautiful. It is good to get out of the gates once in a while and meet those who live around us. To be a part of such a beautiful walk was just a small thing our seminary community could do to show that we care, we are here, and we are willing to be Christ to all those around us and carrying his heart wherever we go.
